Busan City has decided to provide $100,000 in financial assistance to earthquake-hit Haiti, separate from any central government aid.

Korea joined the Development Aid Committee (DAC) of the OECD in November 2009, defining the country as a donor rather than as a beneficiary. As a member of the international community, Busan City’s status has been enhanced through the successful hosting of various international events. Therefore, the city has decided to give humanitarian aid as part of its civic duty as a member of the international community. Busan’s Deputy Mayor for Administrative Affairs sent the Haiti Relief Fund to the Korean National Red Cross on February 1.

In addition, Busan City launched voluntary fundraising efforts for Haiti among Busan citizens in cooperation with the Korean National Red Cross and the Community Chest for Social Welfare.
