Busan is a gateway city for the Asian Continent and the starting point for a New Silk Road across the Eurasian Continent.
Busan, a terminus for the Korea High Speed Rail network to be opened in 2010, is formulating the "New Transportation Policy 21" designed to enable Busan to become a digitized transportation city in line with its ambition to become a global city for the twenty-first century. The successful hosting of major international events such as the 2002 FIFA World Cup Korea/Japan and 2002 Busan Asian Games have helped to nurture a safer and friendlier local transportation culture.

Public Transportation

The local public transportation system provides prompt and efficient subway, bus and taxi services.
Subway Line 1 was completed in 1994 and extended 32.5§° from Sinpyeong to Nopo-dong. Line 2 (50.4§°) runs from Jangsan to Yangsan Bukjeong, and will be extended a few kilometers further north from Yangsan Bukjeong to Shingi by 2012. The first phase of Line 3 ( Daejeo~Suyeong, 18.3§°) started service in 2005 and the second phase of the line ( Minam Rotary~Anpyeong, 12.7§°) is now under construction with the projected opening set for the end of 2010. There are a total of 134 bus routes and about 25,000 private and corporate taxis providing taxi services 24 hours a day. Taxis in Busan have also provided telephone interpretation services for the convenience of foreign visitors since May 2002.

Metropolitan Transportation

Busan is trying to establish a broader metropolitan transportation network by building or expanding railways and expressways, including double-track construction of the Donghae-Nambu railway line( Busan Bujeon~Ulsan, 65.7§°), new expressways( Busan~Ulsan, Busan~Eonyang, Busan~ Daegu), and a highway along the coastline.

Air Transportation

There are a growing number of international flights at Gimhae International Airport , which currently handles 241 international flights a week to and from 30 cities in 7 countries.
To deal with increasing demand for international services, Busan plans to build another airport.
¡Ø There are direct flights to Japan( Tokyo, Osaka, Fukuoka, Nagoya and Sapporo), China( Beijing, Shanghai, Qingdao, Xian, Hong Kong, Shenyang, Dalian, Hangzhou, Guangzhou, Nanjing, Weihai, Yantai and Macao),Taiwan( Taipei), Russia( Vladivostok), Thailand( Bangkok), the Philippines( Manila, Cebu), the United States( Guam, Saipan and Honolulu), Vietnam( Ho Chi Minh, Hanoi), Germany ( Munich), and Cambodia ( Siem Reap).

Marine Transportation

There are 4 ferry routes to Japan

Gyeongbu High Speed Rail (Seoul-Busan Line)

When the two final sections of the Gyeongbu High Speed Rail network are completed in 2010, travel time between Seoul and Busan will take only 1 hour and 56 minutes.
