KUROSAWA's Magnificent World
This year, 2010, is the 100th anniversary of the birth of the greatest director from Japan, Akira KUROSAWA. Beyond Japan, also Asia, his extraordinary career has influenced strongly world cinema. When Rashomon won the Golden Lion Prize at the Venice Film Festival in 1951, people were astonished at Kurosawa's masterpiece and the high level of Japanese cinema as well and Kurosawa became very popular internationally. Kurosawa built up his own world in his own ways adapting Japanese own culture for his films, harmonizing the Western and Japanese cultures, and he always kept trying to find the new ways of filming. In remembrance of his birth and his magnificent works, Cinematheque Pusan will present the KUROSAWA AKIRA Retrospective. There will be screened most of Kurosawa's masterpieces - 21 features including his debut feature, Sugata Sanshiro, the Golden Lion's winner at the Venice, Rashomon, and the great samurai epic, Seven Samurai.
